Certified Personal Trainer Curtis Brown offers valuable advice to help young athletes kickstart their fitness and training journeys.

If you’re thinking about picking up a sport, or being more serious about the sport you’re already pursuing, I’m sure you’ve heard that you need to start training outside of practice. That seems easy enough, right? Lifting some weights, running on the treadmill, doing as many push-ups as possible; if only it were that easy! Getting started is the most important part of your training journey, since you’re learning what your abilities and limits are, how to care for your body while exercising, and how to avoid injuries.

Read on to learn some of my top tips and tricks!

Focus on technique first

When you’re new, it’s tempting to rush into heavier weights, faster times, or higher jumps, but mastering technique is the foundation for everything else. Proper form not only makes you more efficient but also prevents injuries that could set you back for months. Spend time learning correct movement patterns for your sport or exercises—whether that’s your running stride, squat depth, shooting mechanics, or swimming stroke. Think of it like building a house: if the foundation is crooked, the whole structure suffers later.

Be balanced, don’t just focus on one thing

It’s easy to get obsessed with one part of training, like only doing strength work. But your body needs a balance of strength, mobility, endurance, coordination, and sport-specific skills in order to perform. Cross-train, work on flexibility, and strengthen muscle groups that aren’t as naturally dominant for you. This keeps your body well-rounded and less prone to overuse injuries, while also improving your overall athletic ability.

Don’t train through pain

Discomfort (like heavy breathing or muscle burn) is normal, but sharp or lingering pain is your body’s way of saying that something’s wrong. Ignoring it might turn a small issue into a serious injury. If something hurts, stop, rest, and figure out the cause—sometimes it’s just bad form or needing a break. Learn to tell the difference between the discomfort of training and actual injury pain.

Don’t compare yourself to others

Everyone progresses at a different rate depending on genetics, experience, and training background. Comparing your performance to a teammate who’s been training for years is like comparing your first driving lesson to someone who’s been racing for a decade. The only meaningful comparison is to your own past self. Track your progress and aim to beat your best, not someone else’s.

Train consistently, but don’t overtrain

Progress comes from repeated, quality effort over time, not random bursts of intense training followed by long breaks. Consistency builds skills, strength, and endurance while helping your body adapt. But, overtraining leads to fatigue, plateaus, or injury. Follow a schedule that challenges you but also includes rest days and lighter sessions. Recovery is part of training; your muscles grow and your skills sharpen when you rest.

When a coach goes beyond teaching skills and shares their love for the sport, it often inspires their athletes to develop that same appreciation. Coach Guido Margiotta is a perfect example of this. The strong, supportive relationships he had with his own coaches growing up motivated him to pursue coaching himself, and he hopes to pass on not just skills, but a lifelong love for tennis to his athletes. Let’s get to know him!

Tell me about your background in tennis and how you became a coach.

I started playing tennis when I was 3 years old and grew up playing with my siblings. I played competitively throughout my youth, then went on to play at Southwest Baptist University and Shaw University. I always had a great relationship with my coaches, which inspired me to start coaching. I love sharing my love for tennis with young athletes because I want them to fall in love with the sport the same way that I did.

What are the most important abilities a player needs to excel in tennis?

Tennis players need to be coachable so they can apply corrections that their coach gives them, and it’s important for them to keep their coach’s feedback in the back of their minds when they’re playing. When competing, it’s essential for tennis players to have sportsmanship and to be compassionate to the player on the other side of the net.

In general, all athletes need to be good, well-rounded human beings. This is taught at J Sports Academy, which is why we have such a great community.

How would you describe your coaching style?

Tennis requires a lot of repetition, so my coaching style tends to be task-oriented. I give tasks to my athletes and see how they can accomplish it. I am always encouraging my players to continue trying and to never give up.

What is your favorite part about coaching at J Sports?

The environment and the charismatic people. Everyone always has smiles on their faces and are greeting each other. It is a really lively environment, and it makes me excited to come to work every day.

Many athletes begin their journey in early childhood, starting off on recreational teams and training throughout their youth in hopes of eventually making their school varsity team, and for some, their college team. This was not the case for Coach Victor Penaloza. After playing soccer in Bolivia for many years, he made the transition to swimming at the age of 15. Now, he is a collegiate-level swim coach.

Read on to learn about Coach Victor’s swimming journey, his J Sports Academy program, and the Patriot Swim Team he coaches at the Shames JCC.

Tell me about your background in swimming and coaching.

Believe it or not, I did not learn to swim until I was 15 years old. I am from Bolivia, and when I first came to the U.S., I had only played soccer. However, at 15, I decided I wanted to quit soccer and try something new. So I joined my school’s diving team, where I would doggy-paddle my way to the edge of the pool after diving in because I was not a proficient swimmer. With the help of my peers, coaches, and lots of self-teaching, I learned how to swim and eventually found a passion for it.

Now, I’ve been a swim coach for 24 years, and I’ve coached everything from learn-to-swim programs to collegiate-level programs and swimmers on track to Olympic trials. When it comes to J Sports Academy, my background in learn-to-swim is particularly beneficial because some campers are learning the swim basics.

From your experience, what is the most important ability a swimmer needs to excel in swimming?

The most important thing is being coachable. There are many children that have had scary experiences in the pool, so it is important for them to listen to their coaches and follow instructions in order to gain confidence. Whether or not they gain this confidence can make or break whether or not they want to continue swimming.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from a coach that you hope to pass onto the swimmers that you coach?

Do not quit on something you’re not good at. When I first began to swim, I had zero technique and was just able to keep myself afloat. Most people I was swimming with were much more advanced than I was. While it was discouraging at times, I had a passion for swimming and knew that I could not give up. Athletes are afraid of failure, but failure is really just something we need to overcome in order to become better.

What is your favorite part about coaching at J Sports?

Having coached elite swimmers, it’s really nice to see children coming into the pool who do not have the goal to win, but to learn.

A moment that stands out to me was when we were practicing diving one week. On Monday, there were a few campers that didn’t even want to jump into the pool, and by Friday, they had solid dives. This was really rewarding for me to witness as their coach.

Tell me about the Patriots Swim Team at the Shames JCC.

The Patriots Swim Team is a USA Swimming club, which means it’s connected to the same system that leads to the Olympic Trials. But, the team is also perfect for those swimmers who are just looking to have fun and compete locally. We had three swimmers go to their first national meet within our first year of the program here at the JCC. These swimmers have grown a lot in our program, and have even been asking me about collegiate-level swimming—and they’re not even in high school yet! We also had swimmers qualify for the Metro Junior Mets.

I am really passionate about running the Patriots Swim Team because I like to see swimmers gain skills and grow just how I did; with hard work and enthusiasm for the sport.

Why do you encourage J Sports Academy swimmers to join the Patriots Swim Team?

The multisport campers are getting a small taste of what swimming is like as a sport, and we hope that they fall in love with swimming and want to become part of something bigger. While the goal of J Sports Academy is for athletes to be proud of what they’ve learned, I hope that some of them want to take their new swim skills to the next level and join the Patriots Swim Team.

Being an athlete is more than being the fastest and strongest on the field or court; it’s about being compassionate, coachable, and showing sportsmanship. At J Sports Academy, we make sure to instill these values into our campers so they grow as individuals and as athletes. One of our returning campers, Shayla, embodies these values and is a true example of what it means to be a well-rounded athlete and individual.

Shayla is going into eighth grade and is a multisport camper at J Sports Academy, practicing tennis and basketball. Outside of camp, she plays for a travel basketball team and her school tennis team. This is her second summer at J Sports Academy, and says she decided to return this summer because of the camp community. “Everyone here is so kind and understanding of one another,” she said. “I always feel supported on and off the field.”

Shayla appreciates that J Sports Academy allows her to personalize her own experience, which has allowed her to master her skills and also try things she doesn’t think she would do anywhere else. “When I express interest in trying something new, I am always encouraged to do so. Or, if there is a day I really want to hone in on one skill or sport, I am supported,” Shayla said.

Last summer, she spent a lot of time practicing her tennis serve with her J Sports Academy coaches, and she was proud to bring her new and improved serve to her school tennis team in the fall. This summer, she has been focusing on her topspin, which allows her to hit the ball more aggressively. She looks forward to showing off her new swing once the tennis season starts up again in the fall.

“I have grown so much at J Sports Academy because my coaches always step up when they see there is something I need to improve on,” Shayla said. “They are always giving me tips and tricks to improve, and when there is something I need support with, I am never afraid to ask for help.”

Shayla is confident that her summers at J Sports Academy will help her to be as good as her favorite tennis player, Serena Williams.

When you find something you’re truly passionate about, it will always pull you back no matter how hard you try to follow a different path. After Malik Hamilton’s collegiate and professional basketball runs, he thought that the next step in his life would be pursuing a 9-5 job. However, he quickly realized this was not his calling.

Q: Tell me about your experience in basketball. How did it all start for you, what kind of training have you had, and what motivated you to start coaching others?

I started playing basketball when I was 6 years old and haven’t stopped since. I’ve played at the collegiate level and even played professionally in Israel for one season. After my season in Israel, I decided to return to the U.S. to pursue a 9-5 job, but I was not as fulfilled as when I was playing basketball. This inspired me to start coaching, and I now coach with

Q: What qualities does a player need to excel in basketball?

Basketball players need a strong work ethic, willpower, and dedication to get to where they aspire to be.

Q: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from a coach?

Never give up and always have a “why.” My coach taught me that it is easier to focus on what you’re passionate about when you have a reason for doing it. For example, his “why” was his son. When his son watched him coach, he wanted him to see that he was a role model for the athletes. This has always stuck with me, so I always tell my athletes to think about their “why.”

Q: How would you describe your coaching style?

I like to alter my coaching style to each athlete that I coach in order to reciprocate their energy. There are more quiet athletes—like I was when I was younger—so I take a different approach when coaching them compared to the more outgoing athletes.

Q: What is your favorite part about coaching at J Sports Academy?

It’s fun to work with different athletes who play sports other than basketball. I like seeing how the skills they’ve learned in their other sports are transferable to basketball.

Summer camp is a time for making memories, from inside jokes with new friends, to that hard fall you fearlessly got up from, and the buzzer-beater point you scored to secure your team the win. While the goal of camp is for campers to have the most rewarding experience possible, the experience is just as rewarding for the camp’s counselors.

Thomas, a counselor at J Sports Academy for the past two summers, knew he wanted to be active and social when he was job hunting for summer 2024. As an athlete himself—playing varsity basketball and golf at Dobbs Ferry High School—he was hoping to somehow get involved with sports. When he saw an advertisement for J Sports Academy during one of his frequent visits to the Shames JCC, he knew it was something he wanted to be involved in.

While his love of sports is what originally made him want to become a counselor at J Sports Academy, it is the camp community that brought Thomas back for a second summer. “I’m getting paid to teach kids how to play basketball; of course you can’t beat that,” he said. “But seeing how much

Each day starts out with a large game of Gaga ball in the quad while waiting for the rest of the campers to arrive, which Thomas said sets a positive tone for the day. He then brings his group to their first session of the week, which is soccer. “Soccer is my favorite sport here because we do a lot of scrimmages, which helps me to learn,” said Jasper, returning J Sports Academy camper.

and other soccer coaches, Thomas brings his group to the pool, where his campers get an instructional swim lesson, followed by time for recreational swim. “Campers definitely appreciate this because it allows them to cool off after their soccer lesson on the hot turf,” said Thomas. His campers build up an appetite in the pool just in time for the daily lunch in The Masters School cafeteria.

After lunch, Thomas brings his campers to their counselor-run electives, or “overtime sports.” He especially enjoys this time because it allows him to be creative in thinking of games and activities. It also allows him to get to know his campers better. “I enjoy the opportunity to jump into a coaching role to teach my campers some skills and lessons that I have been taught over the years,” Thomas said. Once the elective period is over, campers head to their second sport of the day, then have one last elective period before heading home.

“J Sports Academy is unique compared to other sports camps in the area, not only because campers can map out their own day by choosing the electives that they love, but because all the age groups get to interact,” said Thomas.

Thomas is entering his senior year at Dobbs Ferry High School, and while he is not sure what college he plans to attend next fall, he definitely hopes that he returns as a counselor to J Sports Academy next summer.

Sideline Scoop—Meet the Coaches (Part 1): Dan Cinelli, Soccer

Read below to learn more about Coach Dan and the positivity he brings to the soccer field at J Sports Academy.

Soccer is a game of resilience, teamwork, and drive. It takes an immense amount of physical and mental strength to push through the exhaustion, stay focused, and play at your best for 90 minutes. Coach Dan Cinelli recognizes that success on the field comes from training both the body and the mind, and he brings that approach to every athlete he works with at J Sports Academy.

Q: Tell me about your experience in soccer. How did it all start for you and what motivated you to start coaching others?

Soccer was instilled in me at a young age. My father is from Italy and started playing soccer with me when I was just two years old. When I started playing at the youth and intramural levels, my passion for the game only grew. I was able to expand my knowledge and grow my skill set, as well as build a community within the sport. This grew my love for soccer, and it’s something that I’m happy to be a part of every day.

Q:What do you think are the most important abilities a player needs to excel in soccer?

Excelling in soccer is much more than just your skills on the field. For me, passion, hard work, and discipline are essential to excel in the game. The players who put in the work on and off the field are the ones that are going to succeed. These are the core values that I have learned in soccer that I take with me in everything that I do, and I make sure to teach them to the athletes that I coach.

Q: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from a coach that you hope to pass onto the athletes you coach?

There are bad calls made on the soccer field and there are bad calls made in life. How do we learn from these calls? We should take these experiences, grow from them, and better ourselves as athletes and as individuals.

Q: How would you describe your coaching style, and how do you adapt it to fit different types of athletes?

I’m a very laid-back coach and have an open-door policy to every child and athlete. For me, it’s important that they enjoy the experience and gain the knowledge and skills in a fun, relaxed environment. I think you get the most of our athletes when you’re not putting too much pressure on them.

Q: What is your favorite part about coaching at J Sports Academy?

It’s so fun being around all of the children I get to coach every day. It’s especially rewarding to see the returning campers and how much they grew as an athlete and as a person during the school year.

Let’s get to know our camp directors! In part 2 of this series, meet Jason Scheff.

There is so much more to being a successful athlete than being strong, fast, and skilled. Athletes that excel at their sport are also disciplined, supportive, humble, and resilient. While we want our athletes to be the strongest on the field, in the pool, and on the court, we know that top-performing athletes also have great character.

Our directors developed J Sports Academy to build well-rounded athletes. Director Jason Scheff drew on his experiences as both a camper and an athlete to launch a program designed to foster success on and off the field in an engaging and impactful way.

Q: What was your experience with camp like when you were young?

I grew up going to Ramah Day Camp in Nyack and Ramah Berkshires (a sleepaway camp). I went for a total of 16 summers and loved spending my days playing basketball, getting in the pool, and making s’mores by the campfire. Not only did I make some of my best friends at camp, but camp was a place where I felt comfortable challenging myself and learned to be part of a community.

Q: What is your favorite camp memory from last summer?

A particular moment from one of our end-of-week scrimmages stands out to me the most. A younger camper who had been hesitant while playing basketball all week finally took a big shot and made it—and it was a buzzer beater! The entire group erupted in cheers and celebrated this camper’s accomplishment. It was a great reminder of how our camp community supports and inspires one another. That moment captured the spirit of what we do every day.

Q: How would you define a campers’ success at J Sports Academy?

A camper’s success at J Sports Academy isn’t just about scoring goals or making baskets—it’s about personal growth. We define success as a camper trying something new, building confidence, being a great teammate, and leaving each day excited to come back. Whether it’s mastering a new skill or simply making a new friend, if a camper feels proud of their effort and is having fun, that’s a win in our book.

Q: What are you looking forward to this summer?

I’m most excited to welcome back returning campers and meet new faces. There’s nothing better than seeing kids grow from one summer to the next—not just in their athletic ability, but in their confidence and character. I’m also looking forward to bringing some new ideas and games to Field Day Fridays to keep things fresh, challenging, and fun for everyone.

Let’s get to know our camp directors! In part 1 of this series, meet Tammy Burgus.

J Sports Academy is only seven weeks out of the year; 35 action-packed days of training, making friends, and learning new skills. 35 days may not seem like a lot—and they sure do fly by—but they require 365 days of preparation.

Our J Sports Academy directors Jason Scheff and Tammy Burgus are in camp-mode all year round. From finding the best coaches, to planning and hosting fun events, to recruiting counselors and new campers, they pour their expertise and passion into making each summer the very best.

Q: How did you get involved in J Sports Academy?

Tammy: I was working at the Shames JCC as the director of our youth community service program, Generation Forward. When our CEO, Adam Weiss, invited staff to help build a brand-new sports camp from the ground up, I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve always believed that sports—and any team-based environment where young people are part of something bigger than themselves—are essential for developing a strong work ethic, focus, and a sense of purpose. Even if a child chooses not to pursue sports long-term, the experiences they gain, such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, and accountability, are life skills that stay with them and help them grow into successful, engaged members of their communities.

One of the most meaningful parts of this journey has been building J Sports Academy alongside my co-director Jason. He is deeply dedicated to making sure every child has an incredible experience every single day. Together, we made a deliberate choice to center the camp around three core values—sportsmanship, compassion, and coachability. Watching those values come to life has been one of the most rewarding parts of this work. It has been an incredible gift to be part of creating a camp that not only focuses on athletics but also builds community, tradition, and a safe, joyful space for kids to grow.

Q: What makes you excited to come to work each day?

Tammy: The opportunity to watch our campers grow —not just as athletes, but as confident, compassionate teammates. With nearly 20 years of experience directing camps, I’m constantly inspired by how J Sports Academy fosters individual growth through our core values. I also love mentoring our high school and college-age staff as they step into leadership roles, often for the first time. Helping them build strong relationships, take ownership, and thrive as a team is incredibly rewarding. Each day feels like a new chance to strengthen our camp community and welcome more people into the J Sports family.

Q: What makes J Sports Academy different and special from other sports camps?

Tammy: Our intentional focus on individual growth both on and off the field differentiates us from other sports camps. While many camps offer sports and fun, we’ve built something deeper—a place where young athletes are seen, challenged, and supported in becoming confident teammates and leaders. Our values are woven into everything we do, creating a culture that celebrates effort, teamwork, and character just as much as skill. And just as importantly, our high school and college-age staff are given meaningful mentorship and support, growing into leaders themselves. J Sports is more than a summer camp; it’s a community where every athlete and every coach belongs and thrives.

Q: If you could have any professional athlete as a guest coach at J Sports Academy, who would it be and why?

Tammy: Peyton Manning! He’s not only a Hall of Fame quarterback, but also a tremendous role model who lives out the values we teach at camp. Peyton has spoken often about how much his coaches shaped his development, not just as an athlete, but as a person. He was always open to feedback, showed deep compassion for his teammates and his community, and was universally respected across the league for his sportsmanship. Our campers would learn from him that success is about more than just talent; it’s about being a great teammate, a leader, and someone who uplifts the people around them.
