Sideline Scoop: Meet the Directors (Part 2): Jason Scheff

Let’s get to know our camp directors! In part 2 of this series, meet Jason Scheff.
There is so much more to being a successful athlete than being strong, fast, and skilled. Athletes that excel at their sport are also disciplined, supportive, humble, and resilient. While we want our athletes to be the strongest on the field, in the pool, and on the court, we know that top-performing athletes also have great character.
Our directors developed J Sports Academy to build well-rounded athletes. Director Jason Scheff drew on his experiences as both a camper and an athlete to launch a program designed to foster success on and off the field in an engaging and impactful way.
Q: What was your experience with camp like when you were young?
I grew up going to Ramah Day Camp in Nyack and Ramah Berkshires (a sleepaway camp). I went for a total of 16 summers and loved spending my days playing basketball, getting in the pool, and making s’mores by the campfire. Not only did I make some of my best friends at camp, but camp was a place where I felt comfortable challenging myself and learned to be part of a community.
Q: What is your favorite camp memory from last summer?
A particular moment from one of our end-of-week scrimmages stands out to me the most. A younger camper who had been hesitant while playing basketball all week finally took a big shot and made it—and it was a buzzer beater! The entire group erupted in cheers and celebrated this camper’s accomplishment. It was a great reminder of how our camp community supports and inspires one another. That moment captured the spirit of what we do every day.
Q: How would you define a campers’ success at J Sports Academy?
A camper’s success at J Sports Academy isn’t just about scoring goals or making baskets—it’s about personal growth. We define success as a camper trying something new, building confidence, being a great teammate, and leaving each day excited to come back. Whether it’s mastering a new skill or simply making a new friend, if a camper feels proud of their effort and is having fun, that’s a win in our book.
Q: What are you looking forward to this summer?
I’m most excited to welcome back returning campers and meet new faces. There’s nothing better than seeing kids grow from one summer to the next—not just in their athletic ability, but in their confidence and character. I’m also looking forward to bringing some new ideas and games to Field Day Fridays to keep things fresh, challenging, and fun for everyone.
